Distance Learning

The Internet have spurred a revolution in education. Getting a degree is not as hard as it used to be. Those Universities that adapt are going to see addition enrollment through the internet. It is now possible to live in a remote area of the world and still work towards a degree. This will greatly affect working adults, seniors and the disabled.

There are more than 23 million people pursing continuing education accounting for !5% of all higher education. Anyone with a moderate level of computer skills and an online connection can enroll. Websites like www.classesusa.com have links to 3,000 credit and non-credit courses.

The advantages to online enrollment include the ability to attend classes and study at your convenience. Pursuing higher education no longer interferes with your career.

Loss of student/teacher exchange has been seen as a disadvantage. Also, not all employers recognize online degrees. Especially in the areas of medicine, law and health care.

In order to avoid fraud, it is best to choose a college or university that is reputable. Some online universities are simply selling degrees. Check for accreditation before enrolling.

Some universities will have recorded lectures, some use streaming video. Lectures in many cases will be archived in transcript form so you can go back if you miss something. Communication with instructors occurs by email, instant messaging and chat rooms.

Education is a life long process, and the internet has made it easier for us to stay on the cutting edge, allowing us to remain productive longer.
